    In the book by Seth Goldin, “Unleashing The Idea Virus”, Seth discusses the Yellow Beetle and he explains why it’s all about the product. It’s all in the design of the product or service. Meaning that when you design your product or service as uniquely as the Yellow Beetle and when you release the idea in a warm and willing market the market will take the idea and run with it at a speed you never expected.What does it mean?Robert Stephens was able to capture the meaning in a few words, “I believe advertising is the tax you pay for being unremarkable.”Therefore; if you cannot design your product or services in a unique Yellow Beetle way you will pay advertising taxes. In other words you are no different to the next person who does what you do. And the only way to get out of this boring, unmarketable and conventional situation is to dump money at advertising.     But if your product or service is truly unique you’ll not have to advertise because the power of word of mouth will excel your offering. Other people start doing your marketing for you if you are unique.

    Let’s assume you have a truly unique blog with an email (RSS) newsletter and you write amazing articles. You send your articles to 300 people, (who gave permission) and some of them will pass it on to their friends. These friends then will also subscribe to your newsletter. And within a year you may have a 1000 people on your newsletter. Now you’ll know that you are unique. Now you’ll know that you don’t need to spend money because you are not unremarkable anymore. You’ll become a powerful, influential and a trusted friend who people will want to do business with.

    When you decide on a profitable idea start with the design, start with intention of being unique and when it’s truly unique you should excel because word of mouth will do the advertising work for you. Only your uniqueness will help you stop advertising taxes.
