Yes your local community blog will die if you are trying to get the “kiss on the first” date. Yes your blog will die if you focus on selling. And I am happy to say that other bloggers agree with me. Let me summarise the article and add some of my own spice:
- Stop boring your readers to death.
- Ensure that your readers can navigate your site. You need to include recent posts, recent comments, archives and a search box on your blog.
- You need to include an email subscriptions box on your blog. (The article above tells you to include RSS. This is new technology and many people prefer email. It will change but hang in there. Your free blog has an RSS link already).
- Write like you talk. Imagine a potential reader and tell her your story. When you do you’ll notice that you use the word YOU many times. Talk to her not “them”!
- Include keywords in your title and include keyword reach content. You need to keep the reader and search engines in mind all the time.
- Create a little controversy and give them advice and tools (that can help the local community). You need to become THE resource for your local community. Just think about a new arrival in town. What does she need?
- Don’t be lazy and use the word “it”. You’ll find that you can replace “it” with a keyword.
Blogging is only for those who have a long term goal to help the community, to educate them with permission, to remind them of your blog (via your newsletter) and create trusting relationships. Therefore your need to become a Jack Russel; patience and commitment, passion and an ability to stand up when you fail. And your local community blog will not die.
Have fun.
